Peter A. B. Widener was a wealthy American businessman and collector of fine art who lived from 1834 to 1915. He made his fortune in street railways, real estate, and tobacco before branching out into other industries such as banking and mining.
Widener married his wife, Hannah Josephine Dunton, in 1866, and together they had three children: Eleanor Elkins Widener, George Dunton Widener, and Harry Elkins Widener. The Widener family was known for their philanthropic contributions, including funding the building of the Widener Library at Harvard University, and donating money to various hospitals and museums.
Unfortunately, the Widener family suffered a great tragedy in 1912 when they lost Eleanor, George, and Harry in the sinking of the Titanic. Hannah Widener also perished in the tragedy, leaving Peter a devastated widower. Despite this immense loss, the Widener family legacy continued, and their contributions to the arts and philanthropy are still remembered today.
